Bolt d'Oro Filly Lights Up Midlantic May Finale

Led by a $1,250,000 filly by Bolt d'Oro, the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training closed Tuesday with new or equaled records in average and median. It was the ninth consecutive year that a seven-figure juvenile topped the sale, held annually at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland.

A filly by Bolt d'Oro (Hip 401) topped the session and the sale when sold for $1,250,000 to Winchell Thoroughbreds from the consignment of Wavertree Stables, agent (video). The bay filly is a half-sister to three winners from as many starters out of the winning Arch mare Werewolf, including graded stakes placed stakes winner Howling Time (Not This Time) and last term's Laurel Futurity winner Air Recruit (Air Force Blue). Hip 401 breezed an eighth in 10.0 during Friday's under tack show.

The session's top sold colt was a son of Maclean's Music (Hip 379) sold for $650,000 to NAJD Stud from the consignment of Eddie Woods, agent (video). Out of the unraced Malibu Moon mare Two Faced Moon, the bay colt is a half-brother to three winners, including Grade 2 placed multiple stakes winner Big Switch (Mr. Big) and graded stakes placed stakes winner Hollywood Hills (Hoorayforhollywood). The immediate family includes champion Kiss a Native and Grade 1 winners Yes It's True and Silver Max. Hip 379 breezed an eighth in 10.1 during Thursday's under tack show.

Rounding out the top five prices of the second session were:

  • A filly by Practical Joke (Hip 450) out of Aunt Dorothy, sold for $525,000 to Case Clay Thoroughbred Management from the consignment of Wavertree Stables, agent. From the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Bell's the One and Dream Express, Hip 450 breezed an eighth in 10.1 during Friday's under tack show.
  • A colt by Curlin (Hip 429) out of America's Starlet, sold for $500,000 to Donato Lanni, agent for Imagine, from the consignment of Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent. Out of a full sister to Grade 1 winner American Gal from the immediate family of Grade/Group 1 winners Seventh Street and Reynaldothewizard, Hip 429 worked an eighth in 10.1 during Friday's under tack show.
  • A colt by Practical Joke (Hip 532) out of Cry Uncle, sold for $475,000 to Muir Hut Stables from the consignment of De Meric Sales, agent. The first foal out of a winning Uncle Mo mare from the family of Grade 1 winner Stormello, Hip 532 breezed an eighth in 10.1 during Friday's under tack show.

During the two sessions and pending post sales, a total of 343 juveniles changed hands for $32,766,500. The average of $95,529 was a new highwater mark for the sale, rising 3% from $92,788 last year and eclipsing the previous record of $95,391 set in 2022. The $50,000 median price equaled the record set in 2021 and matched in 2023. The RNA rate was 17%.
