Successful Return to December for Midlantic Mixed Sale

Returning to its customary December slot on the calendar for the first time since 2014, the Midlantic December Mixed Sale posted gains in gross, average, and median over its contemporary, the Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale held this January.

Multiple stakes placed winning three-year-old Carradine (Hip 256) topped the sale when sold for $105,000 to Linda Rice, agent from the consignment of Crane Thoroughbreds, agent for the dispersal of Harry Weisleder/DASL Stable. New York-bred Carradine, by Grasshopper, a winner at two and three, was third in the Damon Runyon S. at two and second in the Gander S. earlier this year.

Caradine’s dam, Summer Moon (Hip 218), by Maria’s Mon, was the most popular broodmare to go through the ring. She was purchased in foal to Bodemeister for $48,000 by Ed Price from the same consignment as her colt. Summer Moon has produced three winners from as many to race

The top selling racing/broodmare prospect was Ingrid (Hip 269), a three-year-old daughter of Gemologist. She was purchased for $75,000 by James Keogh (Grovendale), agent from the consignment of Marshall W. Silverman, agent for Black Swan Stable. A winner at two and three, Ingrid is a half-sister to six other winners, including Grade 1 winner Sean Avery and stakes placed winner Stayclassysandiego, dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Pretty N Cool.

The highest priced weanling on the day was Hip 160, a daughter of the late City Zip, which sold for $80,000. Douglas Arnold, agent purchased the chestnut filly from the consignment of Gracie Bloodstock, agent for Joe-Dan Farm. Hip 160 is the second foal out of multiple stakes winner Geeky Gorgeous (Devil His Due). In foal to Hey Chub, that mare was offered by the same consignor as Hip 61 earlier in the session, when she was purchased for $39,000 by Aaron Sones.

In total, 221 horses sold for a total of $2,448,200 up 170% from $906,400 in January. The average rose 73% to $11,078 from $6,428 earlier this year, and the median increased 43% to $5,000 from $3,500. The RNA rate was 21%.
