Gun Runner Filly, Corniche Colt Top Final Session of Record Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale
The 2026 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training sale concluded Tuesday evening having established new sale records for gross, average, and median. The sale was held over two days, May 18 and 19, in Timonium, Maryland. A newly formatted under tack show featuring untimed workouts preceded the sale on May 12 and 13.
A filly by Gun Runner (hip 357) sold for $1,375,000 to Pedro Lanz, agent for KAS Stables, to top the session (video). Sequel, agent for Chester Broman consigned. The bay filly is out of the Uncle Mo mare Modest Maven, and is a half-sibling to two winners, including multiple graded stakes placed stakes Arctic Arrogance (Frosted) and stakes placed Overstep (Into Mischief). The immediate family includes two-time champion and millionaire Housebuster as well as grade 1 winners Bright Future, Nutella Fella, and Straight No Chaser. Hip 357 was bred in New York by Chester & Mary R. Broman.
“We needed a filly,” said bloodstock agent Pedro Lanz. “There was one (Gun Runner) yesterday, but (hip 357) was my favorite. So I told them if you want the best filly, in my opinion, she’s the one.”
A colt from the first crop of champion Corniche (hip 473) sold for $1,000,000 to Lee Ackerley from the consignment of De Meric Sales, agent (video). Out of the stakes placed Dixie Union mare Secret Union, the bay colt is a half-sibling to two winners, including stakes placed Longclaw (Kitten’s Joy).
“(Steve Asmussen) watched the breeze,” said Susan Montayne, who signed the ticket on behalf of the buyer. “He saw the horse and picked the horse out for Mr. Ackerley. He went back to the track today and called and asked if I would bid on the horse for both of them.”
Rounding out the top offerings of the session were:
- A colt from the first crop of champion Jackie’s Warrior (hip 581) out of Vagabond Princess (Pure Prize), sold for $750,000 to Case Clay Thoroughbred Management from the consignment of Camelot Acres Racing & Sales, agent.
- A colt by Into Mischief (hip 583) out of Verdana Bold (Rahy), sold for $750,000 to Case Clay Thoroughbred Management from the consignment of Lucan Bloodstock, agent. A graded stakes winner on the track, Verdana Bold has already produced seven winners. These include this colt’s full sister, graded stakes placed multiple stakes winner Lucrezia and stakes winner and stakes winner produced Ghalia (Medaglia d’Oro).
The sale topper, a colt from the first crop of Horse of the Year Flightline, sold for $2,100,000 during the opening session on Monday (read more).
“We’re absolutely thrilled with the results,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “We hit the superfecta. The gross is up, the average is up, the median is up, and the RNA rate’s down. The percentage of horses sold out of the catalogue was higher at this sale than any other sale that’s been conducted in 2026.”
Browning added, “More important to us is honestly the strength of the market, the acceptance of the change in format and a change in the way of doing business. We made a conscious decision this year to do what we thought was the right thing for the horse and for our customers. We have had tremendous support from a lot of consignors and buyers over the last two weeks and we’re extremely grateful.”
Over the two sessions, 384 two-year-olds were sold for $52,875,500, up 19.3% from when 327 sold for $44,317,500 in 2025. The average rose slightly to $139,767 over last year’s average of $135,528. The median was $70,000, up 16.7% from the median of $60,000 last year. The gross, average, and median are new records for the Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training sale. The RNA rate was just 16%.
