The New York Bred Yearlings sale concluded Monday evening on a high note as, for the fourth consecutive year, one yearling became the most expensive horse sold at this sale all time. In 2016, 2017, and 2018, that accomplishment went to a sale-topping colt. In 2019, a filly reigned supreme among the Empire State-breds on offer.

The record-setting filly came in the form of Hip 592, a daughter of Malibu Moon which sold for $775,000 (video) – eclipsing the $600,000 mark set last year by a son of Pioneerof the Nile. The Malibu Moon filly was purchased by Larry Best's OXO Equine LLC from the consignment of Winter Quarter Farm, agent for Oak Bluff Stable LLC. Hip 592, the second foal out of the Street Sense mare Savvy Sassy, was bred by Oak Bluff Stables LLC and Christophe Clement.

"This was another great edition of the New York Bred sale," said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. "The New York-bred program has matured and is certainly, in my mind, the finest state-bred program in the country."

Earlier in the afternoon, Hip 495, a filly from the first crop of Wood Memorial S. (G1) winner Outwork, set – and briefly held – the record price for a filly at this sale all time (video). That popular filly was purchased for $500,000 by All About the Girls Racing, JCE Racing, and Travis Durr from the consignment of Denali Stud, agent. The filly, which is a half-sister to English stakes winner Bye Bye Hong Kong and impressive recent 5 ¾ length Saratoga maiden special weight winner Our Country, was bred by WinStar Farm LLC.

Fillies accounted for the four top hips on the day. The high-priced colt over the course of the two-day sale was a second-crop son of current leading Freshman Sire Constitution offered as Hip 342 (video). That colt was purchased by John Terranova, agent from the consignment of Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent, and was bred by Newtownanner Stud.

"The buyer base continues to be very good for this sale," added Browning, noting that Fasig-Tipton received positive feedback on the new asymmetric format in which the first 120 hips were offered on the first day of the sale and the balance of the 332 catalogued were offered during the second session. "It was a strong sale."

Among sires with three or more sold, Malibu Moon came out on top, with three of four sold for an average of $335,000. The top New York-based sire by average (three or more sold) was seven-time leading sire of New York-breds Freud, with four of six sold for an average of $120,000. By the same metrics, Constitution led second crop sires, with four of four sold for an average of $175,000, while Frosted checked in at the top of the first crop sire list, with four of six sold for an average of $138,750.

Over the course of the sale, 186 yearlings sold for $16,200,000, good for an average of $87,097 and a median of $60,000. The number of yearlings sold was up 7.7% percent, and the RNA rate fell 4.5% from 2018.
