Flightline Colt Sells for $2,100,000 to Top Opening Session of Midlantic May 2YO Sale
The first session of the Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training sale, conducted Monday in Timonium, Maryland, posted a six-figure average for the second time in the sale’s history and kept well ahead of last year’s single-session average and median.
A first-crop colt by undefeated Horse of the Year Flightline (hip 54) sold for $2,100,000 to Pedro Lanz, agent, for KAS Stables, to top the session (video). The chestnut colt was consigned by Sequel, agent for Chester Broman. Hip 54 is out of Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner Bar of Gold (Medaglia d’Oro), who has also produced graded stakes winner Coinage, a three-parts brother to the session-topper. Bar of Gold is herself a full sister to Grade 1 winning millionaire Spirit of St Louis. The colt was bred in New York by Chester Broman & Mary R. Broman.
“He had a beautiful breeze,” said buyer Pedro Lanz. “He’s a classy horse. Flightline was one of the best horses of all time. I didn’t want to tell (the buyer) the exact number but it’s a question mark, the price we’ll have to pay for this horse. So, be ready.”
Lanz noted that the colt will stay in the United States as part of KAS Stable’s American racing division.
Rounding out the session’s top five hips were:
- A filly from the first crop of champion Jackie’s Warrior (hip 79), sold for $750,000 to Legion/Gracie, agent, from the consignment of Niall Brennan Stables, agent. Out the Mr. Greeley mare Boodles, the filly is a half-sister to four winners, including UAE Two Thousand Guineas (G3) winner Market Rally (Unbridled’s Song) and graded stakes placed and four-time stakes winner Watchyourownbobber (Hard Spun).
- A colt by Tapit (hip 58), sold for $735,000 to Go Go Greys, BSW/Crow, agent, from the consignment of De Meric Sales, agent. The gray or roan colt is out of the Empire Maker mare Bayou Tortuga, already dam of six winners, including a pair of UAE Oaks (G3) winners in Polar River (Congrats) and Down On Da Bayou (Super Saver).
- A colt by Nyquist (hip 162), sold for $700,000 to Case Clay Thoroughbred Management from the consignment of Margaux Farm, agent. Out of the Into Mischief mare Disobedient, the colt is a half-brother to two winners, including Luv Your Neighbor (Constitution), three-times Grade 2 placed this year at 3, and multiple stakes performer Faber (Improbable).
- A colt by Uncle Mo (hip 107), sold for $675,000 to Lael Stable from the consignment of Randy Miles, agent. The colt is out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Causeway Carolyn, making him a half-sibling to three winners, including stakes placed Sophie’s Cruiser (Catalina Cruiser).
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t very relieved and pleased with the opening session,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “You could feel the energy and the activity that took place in the pavilion today. We’re very appreciative of the cooperation and support we’ve received from our consignors.”
Browning added, “Statistically, (the session) showed pretty significant increases over last year. “Last year was a single (session), so it’ll be the end of the day tomorrow before we can make any absolute comparisons.”
During the sale’s first session, 176 horses sold for $26,410,500. The average was $150,060 with a median of $75,000. The RNA rate was 23%.
The Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training sale resumes tomorrow at 11 AM.
