Final Crop of Scat Daddy Shines at Inaugural Turf Showcase

Yearlings from the final crop of Scat Daddy proved popular at the inaugural Turf Showcase held Sunday at Fasig-Tipton. Scat Daddy was the leading sire at Royal Ascot this year, siring four winners, including three Group 1 winners.

A pair of Scat Daddy colts sold for $250,000 to share top billing. Hip 50, the first foal of the stakes winning Rockport Harbor mare Harbingerofthings, was purchased by Lothenbach Stables from the consignment of Vinery Sales, agent for Spendthrift Farm. Hip 84, the first foal of Danehill Dancer’s Luvly Rita, was purchased by De Meric Stables, agent from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

The sale’s top-priced filly was Hip 12, a full sister to multiple stakes winner Kitten’s Cat, which sold for $200,000 to Cheyenne Stables from the consignment of Taylor Made. That priced was matched a third Scat Daddy colt, Hip 85, also offered by Taylor Made, and purchased by Hunter Valley Farm and by a son of Malibu Moon, Hip 168, purchased by Tom McGreevy, agent for Michael C. Stinson from the consignment of Darby Dan Farm, agent.

“We really didn’t know what to expect coming into the night, and I think we learned some things, both positive and some areas [for] improvement,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning on the sale’s inaugural session. “There was a great group of buyers here. One thing we learned on the buyer side of things is [that] it takes time to change behavior. It was an interesting evening.”

Overall, 74 yearlings were sold for gross receipts of $5,035,000. The average and median were $68,041 and $52,400 respectively. Eighteen offerings sold for $100,000 or more.
